Well, they still attack if you don't keep your distance but I can't help but love these things when they bloom. I hope you like them too.

Um... I did a research about their names but that was a long time ago, and now I'm having senior moments.

Nice blooms. Do you keep these in full sun outdoors?

Yes, they are outdoors full sun from sunrise to late afternoon. Feed occasionally when there are some left in the bottle after feeding my orchids. I guess they like the orchid fert.

while we're on the topic of cacti, here's a baby saguaro, one of my two non-orchids. the story behind it is perhaps somewhat amusing, if you're a baseball fan. the setting was game 7 of the 2001 world series, between the yankees and diamondbacks, where i was watching in a lounge full of yankee fans and yankee haters. as a met fan, i am a full-fledged member of the latter group. after the d'backs blew a late game lead, and mariano rivera came in (back then he was untouchable), i told everyone around me that if the d'backs came back, i'd get a cactus to commemorate the event. they did, and i got a baby saguaro mailed to me from a grower in arizona. the evil empire has yet to win a world series since.

the spikes on this one are vicious. they're as stiff as knives and about as sharp.

Jason, that story is a riot.

My 15 year old had to have a cactus. Found one the size of a softball at a local retail-left-overs discount store, which looks like yours but has BRIGHT RED spikes. He thought it was cool. He got stabbed about a dozen times before we even got to the checkout and being the teenage boy he is, that made it even more "cool" that it actually drew blood once. The "bloody" cactus sits on his bathroom counter next to the newly adopted razor that also draws blood on occasion. LOL!

I admit, the red spines do look cool. If he moves out without it when he goes to college, it's mine. :lemmetell

Tanya, I really like the flowers on yours. Afraid that I will never have blooming desert cactuses without a hot-house, but I do think they are neat.

So do we think the Bo Sox's victory this year was due to a cactus???

I think it was due to the biggest choke of all time in the history of sport. But they still haven't won for as long as I've had this cactus.

    Jason,

It certainly *was* a huge choke.

I once heard a great joke about this Bostonian who dies & goes to Hell. Satan greets him and tells him it will be a little hotter than what he's used to. He replies he can take it, being from Boston. So Satan keeps turning up the heat and the Bostonian shrugs them off with comments like "no worse than Boston in June...in July...in August". Finally Satan gets really ticked off and decides to try a new tactic and cranks the thermostat the other way and everything freezes. He checks to see if the Bostonian can take *this*. To his surprise, the Bostonian is jumping up & down and cheering. "What GIVES????" snarls Satan. The Bostonian says "The Red Sox won the World Series. The Red Sox finally won the World Series!"

Anyway, I have a friend who's a huge Red Sox fan. After Game Six against the Evil Empire I sent him an e-mail entitled "Hell just began to get a bit cold" and after Game Seven, I sent him one entitled "REALLY cold". He very carefully did *not* reply until the last game of the final series. THEN he went into ecstatic joy! To be honest, I can't even recall off the top of my head who the oponents in the final were. I just remember the sweet, sweet elimination of the Evil Empire in the previous series!

Oh, awesome cactus, whether it's the cause of the woes of the Evil Empire or not!

    Cheers,

    Rob
