Cool Five adorable possums on the power line

I came across five ring tailed possums on the power line on my way home today, I was so excited that I ran to get my camera and took some pictures. They were very patient and seemed to enjoy the sudden fame under the flashes.
I find them very cute, but some people here consider them as pests as they can destroy a whole garden if they are desperately looking for food.
They are protected by law however as they are native to Australia.

They are cute! Different colors than the ones we see here though, interesting. We had some small ones come visit our portch regularily and they were neat, then a large adult showed up. They look mean and nasty when they get big! No more allowing the cute ones over anymore after that.

What cool photos. Thanks for posting these. Must be eerie to see them up in the air like that.

Those are a heck of a lot cuter than the opposum seen here in the states - known as the Virginia Opposum. Sorry Virginia - these guys are ugly and nasty.

Thanks Cris, where abouts are you? cause here in Australia we also have the 'brushtail' possum which is much bigger and a bit nasty too Lol, so they are two different species

They like to stare at people for some time then run away, but these ones were very tamed and seemed to enjoy the attention they were given. I would not classify them as dangerous, as they have adapted to live in association with humans in urban areas, but we still don't get too close or touch them as they are still part of wildlife.

To be honest I kind of freaked out and got excited at the same time Lol. They are quite common here and I often see one or two in my street, but five together is quite unusual.

I've attached a link on Ringtail possum below for those who want to learn a bit more on these mammals:

Here in California they are medium colored greay with tails all one color. As far as I know we have just the one species (never looked into it actually). We definately never get too close because we live out in a rural area, they are very wild and not used to humans at all. Its the squirrels chipmunks, and deer that associate with us the most. We also have skunks that roam the streets like they own the place cause no one wants to mess with them!

yuck! pests and ecosystem destroyers here! and dangerouse animals too. ours are soo big and guess where they came from? they eat our baby native birds, and strip things like the Northern Rata (google it) which is a beautiful tree, down to its bare roots. Horible beasts } law or not, shoot on sight.
