Did you then introduce them to the bottom of your shoe?

I squished them with the garbage can. Can't go tracking goo into the house.

I take a huge risk in saying this, but here where I live, there are TONS of snails! I couldn't believe how huge they were when we first moved to the area. Then I found out that they were "accidentally" introduced by the French. They are escargot snails. All of my orchids are outdoors and none have been bothered. Lets hope that is because of the super fleshy agapanthus that they eat for dinner. Glad you found those buggers!

those problems never ends, had one pileatum that keep eated up by snails whenever they came out with new roots till i repotted them and change to a new media (dunno why but its the only plant with the snail problem). tried a few things like soaking the entire root into coffee solution (it works, got this tips from this forum- will drive them out after a few minutes) and also metaldehyde snail baits. problem is they keep coming back.
from my guesses is they had already nest and laid some eggs down there and what i had been doing are just getting the adults to flee or kill those adults, the eggs are down there!!!
your's looks like such a big plant to soak into a coffee solution, you might ending up using the entire bag of Nescafe LOL.

Living in Yuma, it's too hot and dry for us to put our plants outside in the summer, but it's also too hot and dry for snails, thank goodness!
