The previous owner has many reptiles, so I don't think he misses him too much!

Good job, Gabi! So often once health issues actually become apparent with reptiles, it is too late to do anything.

Any idea how the abcess came to be in the first place?

Thanks Pavel! I have no idea how the abscess appeared, but the previous owner said it kept draining it for almost a year, in wich time the snake had no appetite, and was force fed.
I did a bacteriological exam and turned out to be a Gram negative bacteria. The snake responded very well to antibiotics, and within 2 weeks post surgery he was eating alone, no help needed. It gained weight quickly, and today even if i show him a mouse, he gets all excited and he's all over the terrarium!

Very beautiful ! I didn't know you were a vet ! I think that would be my profession, if I would have been a little strong, I simply cannot bear animals in pain or dying. Good job on the snake. I did not know they could have abcess since they are cold blooded.

Thank you Amey! It is a great satisfaction when you save an animal in pain!
There are bacteria species that are found only in cold blooded animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles), which can cause abscesses, because the defense mechanism of these cold blooded species is the same as for birds and mammals.

I like your friend very much Borza. I remember King snakes as a child and found them even then to be interesting and beneficial. AL
