Default Apparently, this is EXTREMELY rare.....

Apparently, this is EXTREMELY rare, and it is called a 'Fire Rainbow'. I took this photo on Bromley Road, Honikiwi, taken 04/01/11 (DD/MM/YY), about 2hrs from where we live.

This particular one appeared in an ice-crystal band, a tight band of Cirrus cloud, the Honikiwi area is known for its Cirrus formations especially ahead of active fronts.

Here is the NZ Meteorological Institutions description:

"Fire Rainbows are an incredibly rare phenomenon that occurs only when the sun is high allowing its light to pass through high-altitude cirrus clouds with a high content of ice crystals."

So, let me know what you think! I have seen many other strange cloud formations and athmospheric related phenomenon, such as Sun Dogs etc, so i will try and get some photos of them too

Very cool. I have seen lots of really cool sun dogs, double and triple rainbows, but not this.

Very cool! Been a while since I have seen this. Don't believe that is a cirrus cloud, though, in which the colors are appearing. Looks more like the vapor trail from a high altitudinal plane/jet.

What a great picture - whether cirrus or jet trail. Thanks for sharing with us, Jordy!

I did think that, but then Cirrus is common here where it is banded like that, with the whispy cirrus behind, there were 2 other bands just out of shot-maybe it was a the RNZAF Boeings?

That's really awesome Jordan! Google noctilucent clouds if you are interested in atmospheric phenomena. They are beautiful as well
