Default Finally! A Bonsai Tree of My Own!

    Hi y'all -

Apparently not content until I fill my whole day and my entire living room with plants, I am now beginning to learn bonsai. It takes much more patience than orchids, so I figure I could use some training in that area.

Anyway, this is my "tree" pre-bonsai, Grewia occidentals, or the Crossberry, Lavender Star, or African Bush. From southern Africa, it takes full to partial sun outside, tolerates wind, dry and wet spells, and has no problem with salt. The lavender flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and after flowering it will develop an orange fruit that slowly turns purple. I'm very taken with it; two of the buds have opened since I've had it.

Beautiful flower ! But you are going to need to do a lot of work on this one, congrats on getting started with this wonderful hobby. Taking over your entire house is possible when you have such supporting partners in crime LOL !

Thanks, Amey - it IS a pretty little flower - not at all on a par with an orchid bloom, but nice anyway. I AM going to have a lot of work to do on this one, but it has good movement through the trunk and I can visualize where I want it go - whether that happens is anyone's guess, of course.

That is quite pretty, and I wouldn't put its beauty at any less than an orchid. Congratulations to you, and best of luck!

If orchids dont give you a lesson in tough love and patience im sure this will do fine from a land where they dont have time to let the trees grow to tall. Have admired some Bonsais out and about with a Jacaranda and most striking (or Evil) the crown of thorns cacti/succulent. Ofcourse both for different viewing pleasures with one being ferny and the other just pure lethal and damn right vicious. Must say your little new purchase dangles quite a carrot and would be an ass not to try. Love the lavender, packs quite a punch.

I think these have to be given human iron supplements/ iron deficiency garden center product towards end of deciduous stage when buds start to burst open - cultivation difficulties with chlorpylotic? A chlorophyll problem anyway, - no panic just a little occasional tweak in the care otherwise same as azaleas, rhododendrons and camelias. Over here so very very very frustrating esp with camelia (like the Magnolia bloom also) as it times with peak frost april time. Orchids do my head in sometimes but these acid lovers, lets just say a love affair best stuck to in fantasy if frost is a threat at anytime. Your lavender star will love its new home with you. I always remember prince charles and lady di at one of our prestigious horticultural colleges he rubs the leafs betw 2 fingers like an ear lobe as he whispers to the plant. He released this as his secret for growing plants.

That's a wonderful candidate for bonsai, Maura - beautiful flowers and colorful fruits. Wish I had the patience and discipline for bonsai.

good question, Branka - I don't know how old it is, but it seems as though someone started its way toward bonsai. It certainly isn't a seedling - maybe 4 or 5 years old?? I'm just guessing here. thanks for your kind comments and for your input.

I've always loved bonsai, and thought that someday (when my life gets a bit more breathing room) that I will give it a try. Good luck!
