    Default A very cool Volcano

On Saturday, my family and I took a 3.5hr drive south to a little city (nothing more than a standard town by US terms i think), called New Plymouth, on the West Cape of the North Island. It is a fantastic little city, although parking is atrocious LOL

The reason for our visit, was i wanted to go to the orchid show down there, but forgot my camera, so no photos there. While i was at the show, Mum, Dad and my brother all went for a drive to the North Egmont Visitor Carpark and Lookout. From there, you get an absolutely AMAZING view of Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont as it is also known, especially on a clear day like saturday.

    Dad snapped this pic

New Plymouth itself sits on the North Western slope of the volcano down at the sea, it carries on a few miles out into the Tasman Sea.

Taranaki is also overdue for what volcanologists say is, a "Major Eruptive Event", which apparently happen every 500yrs. We are now 200yrs overdue. GULP.

If it blows its top, even though i live 270km away from it, i live right under the path of the prevailing wind. It is predicted that the entire north island would be shut down and blanketed by ash. Fun. And with all the recent activity at Tongariro, erupting very suddenly, i have an emergency plan for my orchids

To the lower left of the cone, you can see The Turtle, and almost directly behind the cone, is a parasitic cone, called Fanthams Peak. To the right, out of camera shot, is the remnants of a rather large volcano, which, rather spectacularly, form the Pouakai ranges. If you are EVER down this end of the country, i would highly recommend visiting this amazing geological feature!

Great shot from your Dad, Jordan. Thanks for sharing. Really glad to have your chatty self back. See you are into bulbos now. Not a bulbo fan myself though I have a few. Just discovered my Bulb virescens has sprouted a 10 inch spike, the first time since I got it 2 years ago. Will post pictures when in bloom.

Nope, i got layed off back in August, thanks to the end of the season. Did a good 6 months there though. Im unemployed now, as is over half the country thanks to a shoddy government with ideas benefiting banks and their members' own pockets. But my student loan of 13.5k was approved on Friday, so that means i am officially off to study as off the 18th February!

Jordan, what a lovely picture - but it's even lovelier to hear from you! I sure have missed you lately. Where will you be studying?
