    Cool Bird of Prey

I saw a large bird fly into the trees out back and managed to catch a few shots that aren't completely blurry. I love the birds here, we get such an amazing variety. Hopefully the red headed woodpeckers will relax and let me get a good shot some day. I was shocked at how close I got before this one took to flight.

From the pictures in my Florida birding book it looks like a Peregrine Falcon to me. The pictures of a few that birding groups had taken also helped me with the i.d., especially the pictures they had of them in flight.

Might Be a Coopers Hawk? I had a few around where I had lived in FL. The Peregrine looks a little more white or gray. I'm no bird expert though? Cool photos regardless. Have Fun, Rich

I thought hawk too at first, but the wings and that funny head. If you could have seen it close up, I kept asking myself (because of course I talk to myself lol) what the heck that thing was. It ruffled it's feathers a couple times and then flew by when I got to nosey with my camera. lol After I looked at the pictures a few times and then compared them to other's pictures and a Florida birding website I found one picture in particular of it in flight and it looked dead on for the one in my back yard. I didn't at first think it was one, because at the old house we had one that would sit on the telephone pole and it had a whiter breast with better markings. We got to see that one close up the day it flew into the back window. It sat in the crotch of the orange tree gathering it'self and shaking its head for about 15 minutes before it recovered enough to fly off. Today's may have been a juvenile as he was very curious and not as large as normal.

I am becoming a bird watcher lately. I bought a book at the bird rescue a couple years back so I could begin learning to identify what was visiting my back yard. We get a small Blue Heron almost daily. He will do this once around checking for geckos to munch on and occasionally he uses one chair as a perch to survey the yard from. Two red headed woodpeckers have been hitting the giant bird of paradise. It is full of big fat beetles and they go nuts trying to catch the beetles. Then there is the occasional Ibis...Sand Hill Cranes...migrational flocks of robins and black birds, seagulls, pelicans, tiny red cardinals, blue jays...and to my husbands dismay, two beautiful Mallards that want to make the pool their own little pond. Those are the a few of the ones I have been able to identify with my binoculars and camera anyways.

Great shots, Connie. I would have guessed some kind of Hawk also. Glad you got out the bird book!

Hi, Connie, great shots. It's a young Red Shouldered Hawk. The ones in Florida don't have very red shoulders tho! If you're looking for a guide Sibley's North American Bird Guide is probably the best about, It's a bit pricey but worth it.
