Wink Coldest Week this Season in Metro Denver

Boy, such a quiet day on the forum, so I thought I'd make a post about our crazy weather we experience in Colorado.

We are having our coldest week of the season this week in metro Denver. Lows this morning we in the -10 F range. Right now, my phone is showing 2 F at my home.

The crazy thing is, with full cloud cover, though at times the sun pokes thru or the sun circle can be seen thru the clouds, is melting snow and ice on the roads and sidewalks. In fact, it was snowing lightly while like this and the streets and sidewalks are steaming (water evaporating!!!) even at 2 F.

So when you look at the picture out of the office window, notice the wetness on the parking lot. That is melted snow/ice. If you look closely, you can see some of the 'steam' rising off the road.

Crazy. It make me laugh when ever I see these conditions and these conditions are not rare here.

Lucky you! We have been having those temps off and on for the past few weeks. Monday we had 8 inches of snow and last night/today an ice storm that left our area with 1/4 of an inch of ice and more in some areas. Thousands are without power. Now they are calling for a major snow storm Sat/Sun. Supposedly we are to remain in this pattern of snow/ice storms every few days for the rest of February.

Here in the Seattle are we have chilly weather with lots of sunshine. Perfect for the welcome home Sea Hawks parade. The Cattleyas love the sunshine through the greenhouse window.

Here we are having a very nice 'cold spell'. Night temps have down to 15-21C and day temps around 32 30C - in the lowlands. We've not had such weather for decades. Some of my deciduous dendrobiums and even the cymbidiums are starting to spike!

It has been a terribly cold winter here. I'm worried about many of our more tropical plants that have been growing successfully outdoors for years. I'm afraid we may have lost more than what was lost in my orchid greenhouse. The little pond next to my home is frozen over and has snow on top of it from yesterdays snow. Luckily we didn't get ice again yesterday, but it is still so cold for here.

    Cheers,
    BD

I hope you are over estimating the damage to you plants. I always heard that snow insulated against the cold some. So having snow cover things helps keep them out of the air temps. I think that is why snow caves work. At least it is a hope to cling to.

Get ready out east, the cold air mass is starting to move your way!!!!
