Default Orchids, Betta fish and Baton Rouge

I have been in Baton Rouge two days and so far has accumulated two orchids. I haven't been able to get to the nurseries that are local, but there is a store here that is known for $5 and $7 orchids. Sometimes they have names. Today not so much. But because the apartment I am in has a very sterile feel to it, I bought two orchids home to liven the place up. Then I spotted at another store this sad little betta fish in a cup without much water. I have him now and have filed a complaint with the store. I have named him Gill and hopefully he will help me get through a month of living here. So far the hospital is nice and the attendings and residents seem genuinely interested in teaching us and having us learn. They even give us a meal card for a meal each day that we are here. I am sharing an apartment with a former student that I taught. We are both in medical school together.
The second photo is Gill being camera shy next to the orchids. I have a 5 gallon tank for him waiting when I get home.

Shouldn't feel too bad about the betta's living condition's Traci. Quite common to keep them that way. In their natives lands the live in very small amounts of water. Puddles really. They are adapted to breathing air. I've seen breeders rooms with hundreds of plastic drinking glasses on shelves each with a fish in them.

I understand Chris. I think what got me was the fact that he had significantly less water than the others and they were all stacked on top of each other blocking the air holes in the cup. At other stores it is apparent that the fish cups are cleaned out with new water added and some removed. They are displayed on racks with lots of air flow. I think someone has been forgetting to change some of the water or make sure they all had access to air. Not sure what was up here.
