    Default Peanut & Masquerade

I've had Peanut [a leopard gecko] for about 4 or 5 years now. She can be quite inquisitive.

Masq, is my pueblan milksnake. Very shy and not one to pose willingly for pics, I had to sorta sneak up on her to get this pic -- hence the less than sterling quality.

Oh Peanut is so cool, Pavel! Is she friendly? I could see myself raising something like that, but not the snake. It is beautiful, but not for me. If it ever got out of its cage..... I don't know what I would do!

    Cheers!

"Masq gives me the creeps, looks toooooo close to a coral snake"
That's why I named her 'Masquerade', Diane.
Also, like the coral snake she's very shy. [Corals, BTW, to the best of my knowledge, bite people only in self-defense. If given any opportunity to run away and hide instead they will do so.] Masq, however, is nonpoisonous. her coloration is part of her defense. In the wild she'd eat other reptiles including snakes. I feed her pinkie mice. Crickets wouldn't interest her. Very few snakes eat insects. [Though the green grass snake is one that will and that is on my 'want' list.]

As to her getting out, I do keep the lid to her terr strapped down since 1) snakes are escape artists extraordinaire; 2) considering her shy nature, if she got out I'd likely never find her again; and 3) if she somehow got into Peanut's terr, I'd likely be short a gecko. May be the zoologist in me, but I've always found snakes and spiders beautiful.

Bruce, Peanut will come up to the glass when I'm around because she knows I'm the meal ticket. She doesn't like being held but is okay about being picked up. *"Isn't that the same thing you ask?" Not really. Being picked up = walking onto my open hand then lifted to wherever. Being held = hand wrapped around her body.* Now if I had 'held' her more often as a hatchling she probably would have gotten used to it but I was busy enough not to be able to do so. She's very sweet tempered -- never attempted to snap at me even when I have had to be an 'evil' person and have held her. Leopards are among the most docile of the geckos. [That said NEVER get a Tokay gecko ... they are strong biters and never chill out] Another bonus in my opinion is that leos can't climb smooth surfaces like glass unlike most geckos. There are some extremely cool geckos out there. just a matter of doing the research to figure out what type(s) you could take care of properly.

It's is a prejudice, when you are taught as a child that a multi colored snake can kill you.... shudder ... you never get over it. Spiders, frogs, some snakes - those are all okay.

It's amazing what torture our parents put us through!! I still have a fear of heights from the time when I was 4 or 5 and we were at the grand canyon. My Dad was kidding me because I stayed away from the edge. So he scooped me up and pretended he was going to drop me over.
