    Default antique ethnic brasswork

Upon reaching the city of Davao today, I went to the ethnic crafts stores where I browsed among the native woven artifacts, malong, batik, knives, long daggers etc made by ethnic minorities from the island of Mindanao and adjacent smaller islands. One of the things that caught my fancy is this antique brass container for betel nuts and buyo leaves, for the ancient practice of betel nut chewing to cleanse the mouth (eck…staining the whole oral mucosa red). The design is from muslim Mindanao, either Maranao or Maguindanao.

Is it small in size? Doesn't look very handy for carrying around your betel nut stash! LOL. But beauty is another thing--such intricacy! Reminds me of a treasure chest for gold doubloons. Of something stacked in Ali Baba's cave.

It's just lovely, Nelson. What a beautiful find. If you ever get tired of it.... I don't think it's covered by CITES!!!

How old do you suspect it is, Nelson? It's magnificent!

It is 12 X 6.2 x 5.6 cm. and weighs probably 2 lbs. so it is heavier than it looks. Inside are 4 small detachable compartments.

So old, but not ancient. Still a fitting container for your betel nuts. Since you won't likely be chewing on them anytime soon!
