    Default Sanibel Critters

We just got back from Sanibel ( a little island just south of us) visiting with Tami and Darwin. We stayed at Periwinkle Park and the owner is a bird lover and has wonderful habitats for them and the lemurs. Here are a few pics.

Wow, beautiful birds! I love the photo of the red macaw on the bench. They let you get very close! Thanks for sharing them.

    Cheers,

Neat pics, Cin! We sure enjoyed our visit and glad you could come down. We are heading home tomorrow, but oh wow the things we've seen and done! We went to Corkscrew Swamp twice - it was enchanting! We found many native orchids and got some pretty good pics - I'll post after we get home. The volunteers were wonderful in showing us some special treats that we would have missed on our own. We didn't see the spectacular ghost orchid - that will be another trip!

More pics from our trip to Sanibel. These are from Corkscrew Swamp:
Cowhorn orchid (one of the largest in the wild in FL high in a tree), Night Fragrant epidendrum: this plant was about to be poached but the rangers found where it had been scraped from a tree and hidden for later collection. The place it on another tree far from the walkway (hence the bad pic) it's the white and yellow cross in the center of the pic. They are normally self pollinating as it is unusual to see one fully open. Malaxis Picata growing on floating logs. Helmet orchid almost done blooming but what a thrill!

Some pics from the Edison/Ford Winter Estate in Fort Myers, FL. Orchids growing in the trees all over the place!
The second largest banyan tree in America, some of Edison's phonographs and a 7 foot tall jukebox:

A few more pics. Hope you enjoy them.
Sanibel Lighthouse, a psycopsis (?) growing on a tree at Edison/Ford, redshouldered hawk and a wood duck (I think). At Corkscrew we also found cochleata, dingy star orchid, butterfly orchid, and ridgid epedendrum. None of those were blooming but we were still thrilled to find the native orchids!
