    Default First Snow...Athens, Greece

I know, I know, most of you in the States or in Northern Europe have probably been burried in snow repeatedly in the last months, but hey snowfall in Athens is quite rare nowadays and only happens once or twice a year.
Winter is limited to January and February, with a few cold days in December. There are also a few brief spring days in early January, called "the Alcyonides", which, according to Aristotle, occured when the the Alcyone star (in Pleiades star cluster) could be observed in zenith during the afternoon hours in the mid of winter.
According to myth, Alcyon was the daughter of Aeolus -the god of winds- married to Kyikas, who drowned while fishing in high seas. Zeus spared the couple and transformed them both to a pair of kingfishers and Poseidon granted them a few days of good weather to nest in an island complex in the corinthian gulf, still called Alcyonides.

    Anyway...
These are my south balcony and kitchen window winter views (28th and 29th January 2008). The mountain in the background is Parnitha.

It was very cold! The temps where down to -2C (28F) during the night and there was a lot of frost in the morning.
Now the temps are up again, at 14C (57F) which is typical Alcyonides Days' weather again.
