    Default Phal medium question

Hello. I am a new orchid owner and have some type of phal(noid I imagine.) It is currently blooming and potted in sphagnum moss. Is there a "more forgiving" mixture I can pot this in as i am afraid i will over water it. When I purchased it, it was dry so I watered it well and then waited for it to just about dry out (8days) and watered again. It really seems to hold the moisture for the 1st few days.

I'm not sure if I should wait or repot it. I also am not sure if I should go to an all bark medium(maybe a mix). Any suggestions will help.

Also, where do I get the mix? If you have to pm me the name of the place that is fine.

    Thanks-
    Ryan

Try a local garden store, or a big box store, or even one of the nationwide "marts", for an orchid bark mix. You can also look on line for orchid media. If the bark mix you get seems to you to have too many big chunks, cut up some of the sphag and mix it with the bark. I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you. What is the air circulation like in the area you have your orchid? More circulation would help the sphag dry faster.

Most regular size phals love fir bark. I just found this wonderful stuff...it is much better than the mix that has charcoal in it. That doesn't dry out like the fir bark. In Florida I must have a well draining mix. Always be open minded, the smaller phals in my house seem to like sphag. much more than bark or bark mixes, so I have begun growing a few of the small ones in it and they are doing much better. Species also are more likely to be found in the sphag. You just have to change it when you notice it turning green or if you notice roots looking icky. Sphagnum is a personal choice, some people here swear by it. As they have far more experience than I....I tried their way and found it worked better than what I had been doing previously.
Good Luck...keep in mind, potting media is a personal thing. Go by where you live, your humidity level, the size of plant, etc.

I currently live in an apartment in Pennsylvania with far from "ideal" growing conditions. i do get a good bit of light but air flow is minimal.

I gave up on sphagnum because of all the ferns growing in it so I am now useing Coco fibre chips of varios sizes depending on the plant size. It holds water but not like moss.Time will tell.
