Default Holiday Orchid Care

What do you guys do with your plants when you leave for a couple of weeks in a row and don't have anyone to water them for you? I should probably asked this question earlier since I've already left. I watered everything just before I left and I'm hoping for the best when I return. Any recommendations for next time?

I have left mine for more than two weeks without care. They aren;t happy when I get back, and you are likely to have some blasted buds if any are in bud... But all will recover. The only ones to worry about are those that are mounted and dry really fast. For those I would suggest getting almost ANYONE to care for them - offer to bring them to their house or whatever, just so they don't die.

We always try to get someone to water the orchids, but sometimes we cannot get anyone to come over. If you can take them to someone, that is the best option.

I hope you are having a fun vacation or trip.

Cheers,
BD

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

S/H Richard. The orchids would have that reservoir to rely on for water.

Thanks. I only have one in S/H so that should be fine. I have none in bud so I'm safe there. None mounted either, another plus. I filled their pebble trays a bit more than usual to keep it moist (maybe some wicking) hopefully this won't damage them too much if at all. Hopefully all will be fine.

Except for the fact that it would be a bit painful and make you clumsy, I'd say cross your fingers!

I have left things for a week to two weeks with little problems. I have no mounted though. And I did make sure to pull everything back from the high sun areas to reduce moisture loss.

The other tricky part is the instructions. I tried to make things as simple as possible for my friend who came by once in a two week period, which of course meant that she was to just water everything once whereas I in person might have waited another couple of days on individual plants, so I did have to make sure things dried properly afterwards.

I just got back and the only thing I see are shrivelled and dried out leaves and p-bulbs. I'll be watering tmr morning and hopefully everything should be fine. Any tips or getting the shrivelled leaves to recover and the p-bulbs to re-invigorate?

Do two soakings, the first with the pots submerged for about 10 minutes. Let drip for a while, then soak again for another 10 minutes and set them back on their windowsill.
