Growing the Phalaenopsis Orchid (Moth Orchid)

Check out my article on Phalaenopsis Care in the article library. Growing the Phalaenopsis Orchid (Moth Orchid)

It discusses fertilizer application. I would get an orchid fertilizer available from big box stores. You can also use a fertilizer like Miracle Grow. When you do, be sure to mix your fert at 1/4 the recommended amount. Read the article I link you to and that should help some too.

    Cheers,
    BD

I am a total failure so far at orchids- I want to start there as I may be asking really dumb questions. Fertilize weakly weekly with orchid fertilizer. What numbers constitute an orchid fertilizer? 20-20-20? I am tight financially and if I could use fertilizer I already have it would be nice. My orchid had the temperature drop but I did not get a flower spike- was that probably due to lack of fertilizer? I am recovering(hopefully) from an overwatering situation in which I lost several leaves. Is there any thing that can be done with them as far as rooting? I expect not but what the heck, a girl can ask. I am really thrilled I found this site and hope it will save this poor orchid. Thank you for any help you can give.
    Kathy
P.S. Is this question not in the right part of the site? I haven't post enough messages to be able to download the toolbar to help.

I started to buy an orchid specific fertilizer yesterday at my local big box store, but the guy in the garden department suggested I just use all purpose Miracle Grow. Said it would save money, and his 85 orchids do just fine with it.

    Now let's hope he's right!!

Kathy, You can try Rootone or a similar rooting hormone sprinkled on the root area of the plant. Or if you don't want to disturb it in it's pot, try a fertilizer with the center number (phosphorus) higher, like in a bloom booster fertilizer. I use a three month time release fertilizer sprinkled in the pot at a rate of 1/4 teaspoon, and water with plainwater.

Thank you guys. The roots are not that settled so I will see if I have some rooting powder. Also- the miricle grow- should it be used in a diluted strength?
    I am actually getting hopeful!
    Thanks again,
    Kathy

Kathy, the guy at the store said not to use a diluted strength, but I don't know. Hopefully we'll both get some guidance about that.

I would read the link that BD has his posting about Growing Phal. It does cover the Fert. questions you both have.I don't know of anyone that uses the fert. at full strength.Less is better.http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...-question.html Here is another link you can check out. Good Luck,Rich
