Default Carrie's stupid question - orchid root or spike?

ok so I am new to this and havent flowered anything in orchids myself before so here comes the two stupid questions of the day in the following photos is the growth a root or a flower spike, and also are there two plants in one pot or one plant? It is a Phal equestris var alba I repotted it and the two halves did not come apart so I am guessing it is one plant but I havent seen them like this before. It did not have the growth when I bought it, it has grown since. Thank you so much for helping me with such basic questions.

New growth, not a root that I have ever seen.

It looks more like a spike than a basal keiki to me.
