    Question Is There Any Chance

I had mentioned in another thread about my Phal with the broken spike. Turned out the spike itself was shriveling and was not viable, but I cut the top part (flowers and bud) down to about an inch and a half or so, and propped it into some water, hoping to keep the flowers for awhile longer. Well the flowers didn't last long, but the bud still looked okay, and then this morning, I noticed new growth coming off the side where the bud is.

Is there any chance this little piece of stem is going to actually survive and grow? Am I being the eternal optimist, doomed to disappointment? I'm not even sure what that is that's growing. Could it be a keiki? It's so tiny, I can barely tell it's there. The butterfly clip is bigger than the whole thing, but without the clip, the whole thing would sink into the water and be a gonner.

I'd say what you have at the end of the spike is a bud, but I'm not convinced it will make it. The base of the cutting seems to be turning brown and might be starting to rot.

    Do keep us posted.

When a spike has to be cut early and there are flowers on it...cut the spike off with sharp scissors. Place in a vase with warm water and a pinch of sugar. If you have left over food for cut flowers add a little of this as well. Every three to four days change the water. Your orchid flowers last longer with this method, as will regular cut flowers. In the meantime...your little spike is going to die. Sorry....the spike won't have enough time to grow it to a flower. It's time to go buy a new phal...or oncidium...maybe a couple?

Connie, the spike that was broken, was one of two. I had posted about it before. Someone had just stuck it into the bark and staked it to make it look like it was growing. The rest of the plant, along with the other spike is doing just fine, and seems quite happy. There's even a little bud between the two flowers.

Of course, my little one would probably love another Phal for company!!

There's a chance. This weekend there's a show and sale. I'm just not sure I'll have the money to spend this weekend, and I'm definitely sure I don't think I want to be anywhere the Easter is scheduled to be.
