    Default Fertilizer question

I recently bought a book about orchid care that i have been enjoying reading though I came across an querie last night. I was reading the section on fertilising our orchids and it says to water the orchid first then to fertilise, now I had read somewhere that this is a pointless exercise as the orchid will have absorbed its water nd not be able to take up any of the nutrients as the roots are already saturated, I was wondering if someone could clarify this for me. It said that fertilising before watering could cause fertiliser burn. I am now a little concerned as I always put the fertiliser in the watering water and do not use fresh water first.

The reason to 'wet' the orchid roots first is so that they can absorb the food. Orchid roots turn from white to light green when they are opening up. This is when you should feed your orchid. Our process is to water lightly with regular water and then to feed the orchids with mixed fertilizer and water. It keeps from wasting fertilizer too.

    Cheers,
    BD

Carrie, I'm glad you asked. I've been just mixing it with the water too. Now I know better.

Guys, I'm lazy! I use time release (3 month) fertilizer pellots at a rate of 1/4 teaspoon per pot. Then I only need to water with plain water, never fertilzer solution. Plants have constant access to ferts.
