Default What's happening to my phal

Usually I see this on the spike but now it's on the bottom of the leaves and it's on all of the leaves too. Around the edges there is sticky stuff but only on the bottom of the leaf. The plants that sit next to it (touching each other) have nothing, this is the only phal that has this sticky stuff. Does anyone know what this is and if it is dangerous to the phal?

On a Phal, I would worry about spider mites on the underside of the leaves. My Catts do this and it is natural, but anytime I have a Phal with that much honeydew I usually find mites.

I agree with Clint. Better increase the humidity around that one. I have not seen honeydew on a phal before. Do you see any signs of mites - or ants for that matter? With that much sweet around, maybe there are aphids? IDK.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

I agree with the above. Phals leaves aren't supposed to do that--so something is biting them. I would spray the plant with a good insecticide--if you grow inside there are several available at local hardware type stores that would work. For example Safers makes a couple of different kinds and there is also a brand called "Garden Safe" in light teal colored bottles that I have had good luck with. Spray it outside--but don't leave it out in full sun. I would repeat it at least 3 times at least 4 days apart (so that you kill the larvae and eggs too.) PM me if you need specific product names etc, I'd be happy to help.

I'm not sure that I agree that Phals aren't supposed to do that. I would say it is not usual for a Phal to do that, but I had a plant for years that always had massive amounts of honeydew on it and was perfectly healthy. It seemed to be normal for that plant. Right now my Phal. Carmela's Pixie has some on the undersides of leaves and is also perfectly healthy. Believe me, I do recognize bugs. In both of these cases it seems like the plants are receiving a lot of light. Carmela's Pixie is also actively growing right now, so that may have somthing to do with it.This summer has been very sunny and warm for Seattle.

Of course this could also be a sign of pests and plants should be checked and sprayed as a preventative, especially if this has been a sudden change in the plant growth/health.

Thanks all. I've checked thoroughly but didn't see any nasties. I took it out of the pot as it was still in the store pot with the store sphag and soaked it properly and repotted it in fresh medium. I hope it was just happy, however, all the nasties that could have been there should be dead by now. I'll keep a close eye on it. It was the only plant I have in a ceramic pot (with holes in it) so it might just have been behaving different from the other plants.

Tim, I think you mentioned something like that before and I must confess that I did smell it closely but I didn't have the courage to gobble it up
