Default Odd branching on my Doritaenopsis

I thought my doritaenopsis was in spike but it seems to be sprouting a new plant. Is this an abnormality?

    Yes, it's a basal keiki.

Thanks for the ID guys, I had always thought keikis grew off of spikes. So what do I do, just leave it? Will it start to grow its own roots and make the plant look odd?

    Congrats on your new baby.

I have 3 of these growing (on the same plant) on one of my phals. It's been a few months now, and they still haven't grown roots of their own. I'm starting to wonder if they ever will. It's starting to take a slight toll on the mom plant.

    Keep us posted.

Eventually it may grow its own roots or the mother plant may put up a terminal spike and the basal plant will then continue to grow as the 'mother' fades away.

    Cheers,
