I agree with the comments above the quality of the medium is a significant part of the problem. I would not use that bark at all-get better quality.

I continue to be amazed at how ready & willing you all are to help. Thank you for so much good advice!

After considering all the information, I've decided ordering clear, slotted, air cone pots is the most fool-proof approach for me to address my drainage issue.

To get a better quality bark, I will have to mail order. Since I do have 1/2" coconut husk chips available, can I use it instead of bark for a mix of 1/3 coco husk, 1/3 charcoal, 1/3 lava rock? If I must use bark, what size bark chips do Phals need?

If anyone would recommend reputable, affordable online sources for these supplies, I will appreciate your private messages.

    Take care,
    Dana

Dana, with most orchids, you can match size of potting material to thickness of roots. A fine rooted oncidium would be happy in a mix of smaller sized chips. Phals with their thick roots do better in large chunks of potting material.

The clear slotted air-cone pots are excellent for phals, but I don't like using coconut husk chips with problem plants, cause they retain too much moisture. You need a mix that dries very quickly at the moment. Either you wait for the better pine bark or you can use just charcoal and/or lava rock with some sphagnum moss spread in the mix. Fresh sphag is sterile, it would not promote rot, but increase humidity retention in the mix.
The bits of pine bark and charcoal should be around 2 cms approx. sieve out all the fine ones.
