Default where does a spike grow from on a cattleya

I joined this forum recently and read alot of the threads & posts...I have a few plants that I think are Catts, because of their p-bulbs and 2-3 leaves comming out of them...my question...I see on several of the larger p-bulbs, there is a small bump at the place between the bulb & the start of the leaf...these mostly point up...is this where a spike would grow from, if it were to grow a spike? I have doubts that mine are going to flower, the plants are small with 2-4 bulbs, but not all bulbs have this "bump"
    Thanks so much,
    rwf

I'm not sure, but that's what I have assumed for my catt has the same 'bumps' that your talking about, and I can't imagine where else they would come from, especially since my catt only has one leaf per bulb.

Do you have pictures? Sometimes those bumps can be sheath and then spikes (if the plant is mature enough).

Here are some pics for you. The sheath comes from the center of the top most leaf on the pseudobulb.

Thank you all...this helps me greatly...I don't know what these little bumps are, but at least I won't be waiting for anything to grow out of them...if anything changes I'll add to this thread.

What about for catt's with only one leaf per p-bulb? the sheaths just grow out of the base of the leaf?

Spike grows just as same, from the top of p-bulb and the base of the leaf.

Jeff's photos show clearly the development of flowers in the catt family - at least for more than 95% of the catt family. But there are a few, especially the bifoliates, which just form "bumps" without the sheath and develop into a spike with buds and finally flowers.
And not all sheaths produce flowers - some just dry up.
