    Wink decorative moss

The new phal my husband brought home was packed in a clear glass vase, filled with decorative moss. As I pulled out all the moss I discovered the REAL pot buried within. I've never seen this before. Anyhoo, after I repotted it with proper orchid bark, I used this strange decorative moss as a top layer on the rest of my phals to increase the humidity. Is this stuff the same as sphag? I've noticed a strange odor. I've also noticed mold on the phal that this stuff came with. Is it safe to use? mystery moss

If it is moldy, no, do not use it. Try some Spanish moss if you want a decorative moss. It is open and will grow along with your orchids. I would avoid anything that was moldy. It must be holding too much water and not letting air circulate.
