    Default Possible fungus on Phals

Today while watering, I noticed 5 of my 25 orchids have white stuff on the stems (see below). At first I thought it was water/fertilizer deposits, but I checked my other plants and they don't have this.

Can someone please tell me if this is a fungus? If it is, can I use a fungicide that I can get from a big box store?

    Thanks!

    Dana

Looks like a mineral buildup of some sort. I have not seen this before. How quickly does the plant dry off after watering?

    Cheers,

Thank you for your responses. I, too, thought it was mineral deposits when I first saw the white areas. The photos make them look more crusty & mineral-like than they actually are.

After looking more closely, I decided it looked more like powdery mildew, so I wiped it all off with rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. I hope I did the right thing.

To be sure you might want to give them a shot of Physan with the next watering. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, I don't have Physan. Is there something similiar that I can buy locally?

Try the Bayer Three-in-one systemic for roses. Can usually be found at big box stores or home improvement stores with a large garden area.

    Maybe calcite deposits?

When there is too much air movement and forgotten to water, surely a little calcite formation will be visible.

Not sure I understand. Do you mean I might be letting them get too dry between waterings? I do have quite a bit of air movement in the room.
