Default Watering Phal orchid with Ice Cubes

Bought a phal. yesterday - standard, garden variety kind, from a big box store, nothing unusual about it.

Attached was a tag with three care instructions. Second and third ones semed okay - about amount of light needed and temps. but the first one really threw me......

    1. Water with three ice cubes once a week.

Ice cubes???? Exactly three??? Once a week whether it needs it or not. I wonder if the grower is pushing for higher sales. Anyone ever heard of this watering method?

Dee, this is not a good idea. Do not water your orchid with ice cubes.

    Cheers,

I saw those too. I thought it was to more or less measure the amount of water given to the plant. This would help insure people NOT overwater and kill their orchids. Should go with the book "Orchids for Dummies".

You should run water through your orchid pot for at least 1 minute and make sure it drains completely out. Don't give small amounts of water and never cold water or ice.

    Cheers,

Orchids HATE cold water. I always water mine with slightly warm water...they seem to love it...Betty :-)

I have a couple of these which I have repotted. At least they came in a bark mix. Two of them are now in spike and in a race with my one and only cattleya to be my first earned bloom.
