Now who said that? it is 100% of the Odontoglossum/Oncidium alliance. If it isnt an Oncidium (which to me it actually looks a tad unlikely), it has to be one of the Odontoglossum species/hybrids. Come to think of it, that spike does look odont like to me.

So from what I can tell "Oncidium Alliance" just refers to the group of orchids in the Oncidium family. Now what does Odontoglossum refer to?

    Thanks!

Pretty much, Oncidium alliance refers to every orchid in the subtribe Oncidiinae, which includes all of the Oncidiums, Odontoglossums, Miltonias, Cochliodas, Brassias, etc etc.

ornithorynchum - means like a bird - birdie nuts ( like we are orchid nuts ) are ornithologists....

and btw, according to the taxonomists , all odonts are oncids..... apart from the ones which are something else like Rossioglossums and lemboglossums which were odontoglossums for the first several years , if not many years, of my orchid life, so that I still forget, and revert, and show a p[lant under the "wrong" name - which is a matter for amusement by me, rather than being a sin.

Hey, Miller, the more I learn, the more confused I feel, sometimes! I guess that really, the more I learn, the more I realize I have to learn. The orchid world is HUGE and varied, with enough for everyone to find something to love.

Your plants look nice and healthy - great job! By the way, I have some oncidiums - I get great flowers and lovely fragrance off them. My husband's favorite so far in my Oncidium Sharry Baby because of the fragrance. Many of us enjoy the oncidium genus. Even if not, enjoy what you love!

Thanks for the compliment Patty. Since the Oncidium is my first Orchid and the first I have gotten to flower it will always be my favorite. I should look in to getting a Sharry Baby, everyone who has an Oncidium seems to mention that one and its fragrance! I have purchased three more Orchids since joining the forum and even mounted a Dandrobium (sp?), I want to see how far my luck will take me! lol

I must say that orchids are addictive, and I think this forum contributes to the delinquency! I had three little orchids when I joined in March, and I now have between five and six dozen!!!

I have learned so much from the members of this forum - they're great people and I'm honored to be a part of such a group. Once again, Miller, welcome!
