I purchased a mature Phal Bellina about a year ago. It came with a half inch spike, which hasn't increased in size. Almost immediatley, another spike started to appear, but this one also stopped at the half inch mark. Neither has grown in several months. Both are still green, and therefore pressumably healthy.
It is in my greenhouse; watered once a week; feed about once a month; min night temps of 62 degrees; good, diffused light.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Increase the light levels slowly to cause the orchid spike to start growing again.
cheers,

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box!! OrchidTalk is a world community. Celebrate our Diversity!

Thanks for the advice.
A picture of the plant would help.
Ahh, the ubiquitous bellina, beautiful and aromatic..it needs rather good humidity and watering to ensure the roots are plump and healthy. Try fertilising more often, once a month may not be enough and also depends on what type of fertiliser your are giving it..fertiliser high in nitrogen will promote growth whereas fertiliser high in phosphorous will promote flowering..if uncertain, check the label on the fertiliser bottle..you will notice the nitrogen phosphorous and potassium levels stated there or sometimes abbreviated as NPK..look out for fertilisers with higher phosphorous levels..the best way is to fertilise weekly weakly..which is kind of a mantra amongst the orchidists..to maximise, rotate btwn a growth and flowering fertiliser every week..
Increasing light levels slowly is also a very good tip, sunlight is one of the most important elements in flowering, so if your bellina has not flowered in a while or the spike has not grown, its prob a good bet that its not receiving enough sun..
Hope this helps a bit..
