    Default Blc Dean Martin giga

I have a blc dean martin giga, it has been growing very nicely, getting big, but I read somewhere that giga catts do not bloom well in the south, I'm in the palm beach area of Florida. Will this bloom for me or am I chasing rainbows? Any info appreciated. thank you

It's not one of the cooler growing ones, as far as I know. If you don't mind a bit of kibbitzing, the name should be Blc. Dean Martin 'Gigas' It's a standard dark lavender with excellent bloodlines, so with a little care, it should grow like a weed for you. Fertilize weakly weekly, watch for critters, and shelter from direct noon sun. You're probably doing that now.

The trick (imho) is to buy only what you see locally...if you want to grow outdoors. There are certain types of orchids that don't like our heat and humidity. Your plant, however, shouldn't be among those. If it is a recent purchase, as in the last two, or three months; it may just be in shock. When a plant goes from greenhouse to store to you, or when it gets shipped...or repotted, they go into shock and with some plants it can take up to a year for them to quit "stressing", and go back to active growth. I'd suggest being patient. I have a few Cattleya that sometimes quit growing on me for over a year. Just be vigilant as these are the plants that bugs like to attack. Hang in there, when it gets used to it's new owner's care regimen it will perk up for you.

thank you guys, I don't mind a bit of kibbizting at all I can be sloppy with my names. I usually try to research a plant before I buy, however this one was different. This is silly, but Dean Martin was my mother's favorite singer so I saw the name thought of my mother who has passed away and I thought it would be a nice way to remember her, she also liked Elvis and I have "Hawiian Wedding Song" for the same reason. A purchase made with the heart not the head. Again thank you so much for the info and hope to see a bloom.

I do the same. I bought a plant that reminded me of an Aunt back home.

I've seen this plant in bloom several years ago. It is simply stellar! You made a great purchase. It will bloom here.
