Default neem oil for fungus and disease.

I have some catts that seem to have become infected with a fungus. A professional orchid grower in the area recommended a monthly application of neem oil as a preventative after the infection has been eliminated. Does anyone here use neem oil as a maintenance program ? and what would be the recommended mixture ratio?. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi Fred,

I use neem oil every 3 weeks or so. Neem oil is a good insecticide and fungicide. Fungicide property is more preventive than curative. I mix 5ml of neem oil with 2-3 ml of mild liquid soap first and then mix it in 1 Litre of warm water. Liquid soap helps in mixing neem oil with water.

Once the mix is ready, it would be whitish in color and you have to spray when the water is warm enough.

I would spray this mixture early in the morning (~6.30 to 7.00 a.m). Spraying it later would scorch the leaves

Big plus with neem oil is it is completely safe to butterfly and bees and smokes only the bad guys

Sounds like info I can use today! Or as soon as I get some neem oil.

Spray heavily so it is dripping off the plant?

    Thanks!

One caution is that, if your plant is put back into the sun with the oil wet, it can damage the leaves (burn them because the droplets magnify the sun). So, after spraying, until your plant is dry, keep it out of the sun.

Does that apply for artificial lighting too?

I wouldn't think so, its not as powerful as the sun. The first time I used neem, I wasn't aware of the sun thing and a couple of my oncidium crosses got a little damage, but it wasn't a really big deal. They did improve on their new growth with the fungal spot. I haven't had any trouble just using it and putting them out of the direct sun - still quite a bit of light, but not in the window where they usually are.

I've been reluctant to try neem, because as an outside grower I'm afraid the leaves will burn

That makes sense, if mine were outside or in a greenhouse, I'd probably avoid it. When I bought it I didn't know about neem causing sunburns, I'll probably buy other stuff in the future.

    Hi ed,

I grow outside as well. I use neem oil for all my orchids and other plants for the past 7-8 years. I am growing orchids for the past 2 years but other plants for past 7-8 years. concentration & spraying time is very important.
