    Default potting medium for phal

I recently bought a pot of phal. After the flowers have dropped off, i am considering repotting. But after reading a number of articles, all of them mention the use of bark as potting medium.

I also recently bought a bag of clay pellets. Question: instead of bark, can i use these clay pellets?

And can i mix in the current medium of moss?

    Hi Yanglik,
my potting media for my phals is 1 part coconut husk chips,1 part charcoal pieces, and 1 part clay pellets. I usually repot a newly bought phals that is in spagnum moss in the above media combination, since moss tends to retain too much moisture and rots the roots. While the above media drains pretty quickly and dries up a bit quicker than moss and there by minimises root rot.
personally i think a combination of both bark and clay pellets will do well. Maybe others, more experienced grower, will chime in for advice.

I think clay pellets, by themselves, dry too quickly for phalaenopsis. I've had success using clay pellets with cattleyas. I tried phals in that media a few years ago and they didn't do very well. Also, I don't recommend mixing the old sphagnum in with the new media. I would discard all the old media. I use medium Orchiata bark on my phals now. I often mix in a little LECA (clay pellets) and a little charcoal, but Orchiata can be used alone also. I've heard of growers having success with a mix of bark and sphagnum but I've never tried it myself because I grow my orchids in a humid environment.

I grow most of my orchids in a mix of 2/3 clay pellets, 1/3 coconut husk, and a small amount of charcoal. Yes you can use straight clay pellets, but you need to water more often, and feed more often as well.

You could possibly use only clay pellets with a water reservoir at the bottom of the pot...this is semi hydrophonic growing. I am growing my cats and paphs in it and planning to move a couple of phals soon and experiment.

Just search for "Semi Hydroponics" and you will find tons of information on it. The first site should belong to one of our members who originated the technique.
