Default How to identify an orchid? Is it through leaves or the flowers?

Hello! I am a newbie in growing orchids. I am trying to learn how to properly identify an orchid. I am confused because when I searched for images, I can see an image of Cattleya also in Dendrobium images. What is the proper way of identifying them? Is it through their leaves or through their flowers? So far, I can identify Vanda and Phalanoepsis already.

Thank you and have a nice day to all!

In my opinion, precisely identifying orchids is tough by looking at the leaves or flower. You could be near but there could be exceptions. It is based on the number of anthers etc. A good orchid encyclopedia or orchidwiz would be a good starting point.

Broad narrowing down to ID orchid type is by leaves, roots, growing habits and location. Some genera are very large with many different types of leaves and flowers like the genus Dendrobium, which has close to 1,200 species. Bulbophyllum and Epidendrum each have close to 2,000 species. When it comes to ID'ing hybrids, many would be impossible to ID.

To start with it's helpful to understand the difference between sympodial and monopodial orchids. Here's a link that explains it.
