Default What to do when your mail-order Phal arrives?

    Hi y'all,

I'm just waiting for my new Phal to get here, and, I was wondering, what do I do once it arrives?! lol I've always bought Phals at the store so not sure if mail-order is different...

I know for African Violets, I usually repot, isolate, put in a dome for higher humidity and isolate, then keep the light down a bit in case it's been growing in dimmer conditions than my light stand.

So...anything like that I should know?

I check the media it is in and re-pot out of sphag as soon as I can. Certainly the desire for new root growth is there but with a phal, I re-pot phals with active root growth or not. Sphag is too easy to cause root rot.

I also remove all packing materials. And I check the roots. I also inspect for obvious issues (bugs or disease). I try to keep them away from others if I can for a week or 2.

Welcome. African violets are very similar to phals in their care. In fact african violet bark mix is ideal for planting your Phal in.

When I first get new orchids in the mail, I make up a soak. I give them a small amount of fertilizer in warm water and a tablespoon of honey, and if needed a drop or two of superthrive to help the roots. I read the honey trick years ago when researching how to rehydrate vandas that arrive in the mail. It is a simple sugar they can absorb easily. Some buy a special molasses for this, but I always keep honey in the kitchen so it is what I use.
