I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but wrapping some strands of sphagnum loosely around the roots, and misting very lightly has encouraged root growth for a lot the keikis my phals produce....Good Luck

that's a great idea! It's still not growing anymore. I think I will try that. Certainly can't hurt and today is water and care for orchids day....
    Thank you!

Please excuse my ignorance - what exactly is a keiki and how do you pronounce it?
As for cats - ya'll tug at my heart! I miss my Tinker Toy. The old monster is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. He would have bit me on the ankle for "awwwing" over another kitty but I'd do it anyway.

    Hi Tmai,

Keikei is a Hawaiin work (pronounced kee-kee). It means baby. The best example of keikeis are spider plants. All of those little babies that grow off the momma and can be potted separately are exactly like the keikeis that can grow on orchids. They're most common to Dendrobiums (mine alway throw them out), but not uncommon on Phalenopsis (although I've never had one on a Phal).

Once they grow big enough to have some roots, you remove them with a small knife cut, and voila! You have another plant, identical to the parent.

Many suggest that keikeis signal a less than happy plant. That it's the plant's way of perpetuating itself because it fears it may die. That would certainly be true for my Dends! But I think some plants are just prone to it.

There is a plant auxin or hormone (don't remember exactly what it is), called keikei paste that you can apply to Dends or Phals to try and promote keikei growth. But as I said earlier, orchids are much like cats. You can hope they do something, and they'll still do what they choose!

Okay - I'm going to press my luck on how good Julie is feeling about her new plant - -

It's spelled Keiki, it's pronounced "Kay Kee", it is Hawaiian for child or baby. (Also a Japanese word)

Well, Massachusetts is a lot farther from Hawaii than Southern CA, so I would never profess to fluency in Hawaiian. So I bow to Diane on this. I have seen it spelled and pronounced as I do, but the Web promotes disinformation as well as learning.

    Thanks Diane, for educating me!

Damn, the Prozac makes it hard to grab that cheese!

Hmmm.... Keiki = baby..... hmmm. The suggestion that keiki may indicate a less than happy plant is interesting. I always thought that pregnant mothers were mostly happy, although stressed. Can't comment from experience, though, thank goodness!

"Kay-Kee" or Kee-Kee" - both sound nice. Do they appear on orchids other than Dends or Phals?

    Tmai,

Try a search on both spellings of keiki. There was a thread on it way, way back. Maybe 15-18 months ago. That question was asked and answered and I don't remember what was said. I do recall some good info was in it. If you find it, please give us the link!

...Have to run. Gotta pipe a graduation. Tis the season...
