Default Where can I find orchids?

Hi everyone. I recently bought my first orchid . I'm wondering if there might be some good sites or suppliers I can order from online?

I like my unidentified Phal., but in the future I'd like to be able to know specifically what species I have.

I was searching old posts and noticed one in which someone stated that we can't name suppliers on the forum, but that they could PM them. If anyone could PM me this info, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Hi Twill,

Welcome to the forum. You are correct about not naming vendors on the forum. This forum is about the care and cultivation of orchids and not necessarily their sale. That said, the members here buy orchids all the time and will very happy to share our sources with you via PM. To enable your PM system so that you can receive messages, you will need to participate in the forum a bit. The minimum number of posts to get access to the PM system is five. Once you reach that limit, members can send you messages off of the board.

    Welcome to our orchid community!

    Cheers,
    BD

This is a great pace for sharing and help, so I am sure you will find plenty of resources.

How about you tell us where you are in the world, then people might be able to give you ideas of places that are local to you as well as mail order nurseries.

Thanks for the info, everyone is very welcoming here.

I live in Davenport, Iowa, which is in eastern Iowa on the Mississippi River. Finding a nearby supplier would be nice, but I haven't been able to find any.

I don't mind having the plants shipped, but I'm guessing that shorter trips are best for the plant.

I have purchased orchids from the Florida, Maine, Ill. and Hawaii, and all made it safely to me. So as long as you are having good weather, you can feel good about ordering orchids. Make a few more posts and we will be sure to send you some recommendations via PM.

Welcome to the group. I have ordered plants online and I have bought locally and to tell you the truth, both works just fine as long as you check what kind of shipping methods are used. I even had plants in spike shipped to me and i'm enjoying their blooms right now, although i do lose the top of the spike sometimes when it's already in bud.

As long as we're on the subject of shipping, is it wise to avoid high temperatures? Here in the midwest we've been having an extra-warm spring. Outdoor temps could be (and will be on a regular basis pretty soon) into the 90's, and the temperature inside a delivery truck could get much higher. Would this cause any problems for the plants?

Yes, you need to avoid extremes. A lot of vendors ship priority mail, so figure a day in the mailtruck. Still, I have only lost one plant to shipping damage.

I tried to send you a PM but it wasn't accepted. Ask BD if your settings are correct.
