    Question pollenation ??

Hi Guys, I've been reading around, and used the search feature but I can't find any threads on this subject. I have access to a lab, and so I wish to do the whole procedure, from pollination to flasking to raising seedlings !! I am a little ambitious, but i can get credit for lab tech for this, so I was hopeing that someone might have a few pointers !
    Q1 : should I use an unopened bud as the mom/dad ?
Q2 : How much caution should be taken that the cross might take ?
Q3 : If I do the cross at home, is there a chance of infection ?
Q4 : what household item could be used to gather/apply the pollen?
Any suggestions will be gratefully recieved !!
    Thanks, J

Maybe you meant that there is no thread that answers your specific questions, but just to be sure, did you see the whole section of the forum on propagation, with subsections on hybridization and flasking, etc.?? There are some pretty extensive how to's and lots of tips in there.

So check that out if you haven't seen it. And sorry if you have already seen it, just trying to be helpful!

(and BD if you by chance read this, the link in the new tool bar for the propagation forum doesn't seem to be working, at least not for me)

If you go to the entry page or "lobby" of the whole unit, then click on Enter OrchidTalk forums, you should get a list of all the various subject forums and from there you can go to the sub-sections.

And I don't know what words you searched for, but I wouldn't be surprised if "pollenation" didn't get any hits, but maybe "propagation".

Hi, I am not sure why the link is not working for you. Maybe you can uninstall and then re-download and install. It works fine for me. I just tested it again with a fresh install. That link should take you to this URL: http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...rchid-culture/

There may have been some glitch in your original download. Please remember to wait until the Grey Install Button becomes active before clicking it. That way all the links will be downloaded to your browser correctly.

    Cheers,
    BD

you will only need to use an unopened pollen parent for phragmipediums because I heard their pollen doesn last very long. Also use unopened blooms for self pollenating species such as phrag schlimii, but self pollenating plants are rarely used as a pod parent because you may get a mix up of the offspring. Other than that just use opened blooms, you will see the flower parts better. Also try to use fresh bloom, since you will have a higher potential off getting offspring.
...I forgot I wanted to do some pollenating too....the last time I tried the pollen was not accepted

there will always be a chance of infection. Chances of infection can be reduced by harvesting a green pod. Basically the pods have not dried nor split opened yet. I have not done this before though or really looked into it so I don't know what it envolves.
The first time I tried flasking I used bleach to sterilize by dry paph seeds (which I weren't from my own plants). I think I used a 1 part bleach, 9 part water solution in a sterile test tube for 10 mins. I believe the viable seeds are the ones that sink. I Sterilize containers in a pressure cooker, and refrained from talking and avoided any drafts when opening these containers. Unfortunately my first attempt at flasking was a failure, non have germinated yet. Paphs can be stubborn though, I should have started with phals.
