    Default Winterizing Info Needed.

I have been searching for info on care for the winter months here. We usually have mild winters, occational cold snaps. Winter chills usually get into the 40s, occational 30s. I know some orchids require a cold period in order to bloom in the spring. I have the winter info on Dens, but that is about it. Do not really need care down to species, but Genre would be great. Is there a sight that has this info by geographical location?

Aside from dens, what kind of orchids do you grow Patrick? Are you more concerned about protecting the plants when it gets cold, or getting them to bloom?

    Hi Patrick,
I will be interested to read the replies. I live in Metairie, LA and have pretty much the same temps. as you. Yours may be slightly cooler ! Also, since our area in LA has high humidity, I think A/C eleminates that indoors. What do you think ? Have just started with orchids and only have two. I am sure before long I will have more ! Guess it will depend on how these two progress. Just wish I understood all the orchid "lingo".Mine grow on a 12" wide windowsill and look healthy so far ! They are right in front of a garden window. Regards, Jana

I have most of mine under an oak tree. They seem to be happy there. I have 2 Dens in the house, and they seem fine where I have them. The strange thing is, these are suppose to like alot of light, and they are not near a window. I placed them in the spots they are in when I bought them, and had not really started doing research on lighting, etc. One has been in bloom since I bought it almost 2 months ago, and it still looks the exact same. I would keep an eye on the leaves for color, but especially the roots. They seem happy where you have them, don't mess with them. They tend to like medium light. I put my inside orchids out on Saturday mornings and give them a good watering. 1/4 th fert. I also either use distilled water, or rain water. All of my orchids are in clay pots. The ones inside are sitting on the clay dishes with glass marbles in them. I keep them above the water that I pour into the bottom dishes to increase the humidity. I have to add water daily. I have a couple of Vandas outside (south side) that I water every 2 to 3 days. They get sun from sun up until about 11A. They are in orchid bark and wooden baskets. My outdoor phal is in a wooden basket and orchid bark also. It is under my oak tree, and never gets direct sunlight.

Im not far from either of you being in La Place. I grow 95% of my orchids outside with almost daily watering of the vandas and every other day watering of the potted orchids. Then when the temps start droping into the 50's I put them under an enclosed car port and turn on a heater at night if the temps outside drop around 30's. I water only about 1x a week or maybe every 2 weeks for the dends and a little more frequent for the vandas and mounted ones. All of my phals are in a northern facing window all year long that gets speckled afternoon sun. 3 of which are beginning spikes and 1 that is forming buds. Also the phrag I have loves that spot too. I water with the hose unless i am fertalizing. But most of the time they get municipal water and are just fine with that. I use rain water with the fertalizer once every so often.

Is your P. Long Pride Treasure in spike yet? Mine has about a 1" long spike starting. Just discovered it yesterday when watering.
