    Default Pruning

    12/9/07
Hello. This is my first post on this forum.
My husband bought me an orchid for my birthday back in September. It has the label "Baldan's kaleidoscope". There are two stems. There were about six or seven blooms, which have now all fallen off. At the top of one stem I can see a new bud. At the top of the other, the stem had dried up about 1 1/2 inches. I went ahead and cut it off. Then I thought that I better find out what is the proper way to prune this particular plant. Should I prune it at all? If so, please advise me how I should do it.
(I would also appreciate any other guidance in caring for this orchid. The only instructions on the label said to water it once a week and not let it stand in water.)
    Thank you very much!

Welcome to the group, Lilapriti. You have a Phalaenopsis orchid. In our article library there is an article on Growing the Phalaenopsis Orchid (Moth Orchid). This information should be helpful for you.

On cutting the 'spikes' off: I recommend cutting them back to about one inch above the plant. You can cut the back below the third node and it is possible the spike will branch and produce more blooms, but this could also stress your plant. We cut them back after the blooms fall.

Glad to have you in our orchid community.

    Cheers,
    BD
