    Default Kahlua

Description: the best homemade Kalua, IMHO
I bottle and cap it, makes great gifts but I save it for special occasions.
Serving Size: depends on how much of a hangover you want :)
    Time: not long
    Difficulty: Easy

    Ingredients:
    1. 1 12-cup pot very strong coffee
    2. 2 lbs. light brown sugar
    3. 5 tablespoons vanilla
    4. 1 bottle 190 proof grain alcohol
    Preparation:
    1. locate 190 proof grain alcohol. It is illegal in my state but I purchase it in Connecticut. I always pick up a few bottles for there are other recipes that I also use it in.
    2. make the coffee
    Instructions:
    1. Bring the coffee to a boil in a pot on the stove.
    2. gradually stir in the brown sugar
    3. remove from stove and cool to room temperature
    4. When cool, add the vanilla and alcohol
    5. It is ready to serve.

Any particular brand of coffee? I have never thought of making something like this. There are many farmers around here that make grain alcohol and sell it in fruit jars. How does one know what proof the grain alcohol is? (There are no labels on this stuff!) hehe..

    Cheers,
    BD

ask the farmer...you can't distill any more water out of 190 proof. I bet that is what they have. I like using a fine ground French roast coffee but whatever your preference is...a friend that I shared the recipe with uses chocolate flavored coffee when he makes it.

If you have access to grain alcohol I will post some other recipes that I use it in.

selling it if fruit jars...hmmmm....Moonshine comes to mind, LOL.

The stuff is so strong. I don't know how people can drink it.

nor do I, but it makes great liquors for it doesn't have a flavor of it's own.

We have a similar situation here. My parents make Kahlua using a recipe very much like Ron's. We can't buy bottled grain alcohol in liquor stores in Manitoba (and perhaps not elsewhere in Canada, either?), but it's available in North Dakota so we often pick up a bottle or two of it to take home with us when we visit the U.S.

If you absolutely can't find grain alcohol, you can use vodka as a reasonably good substitute, although the grain alcohol is the best.

    Cheers,
    Rob

190 proof equals 95% alcohol. Some 'shine is close to 98% (although I've never had any). Fl used to sell a product called 'Everclear' but yu can't get it here in the 190 proof anymore.
When I was a youngster, dad got some 'shine in a mayo jar that was so strong it stunk up everything in the 'fridge. He drank a bunch but ended up throwing most of it out (he said, lol) because he was afraid us kids would get drunk off the fumes. Of course we would never have touched it - at least not without marking the bottle and replacing the missing stuff with water

Tami, Everclear is what I purchase in Connecticut

My son was not smart enough to top off the Vodka bottle, that is how he got caught, LOL.

    what size bottle?
    Pint quart??
I have seen Everclear up to a gallon.

Added recipe from college - a while back
In a 30 gal trash can mix assorted fruit juice/punch ginger ale and 1 gal grain "oh my head" the next day
