Mine is also in spike...I agree with it being a rapid grower. My first thought was the cause of decreased blooms had something to do with the cause of leaf die back as well. I assume Chicago has a chlorinated water supply. Do you let the chlorine dissipate from the water prior to using it? Have you had the hardness of the water checked? Do you flush your pots on a regular basis to remove fertilizer salts?

With the leaf tips dying back the way they look, I'd guess water quality and too much fertilizer. Maybe try distilled water for a time, and as Ron said, Flush the pots regularly.

Does it have any roots reaching the reservoir of the SH pot?

Nope; the roots are pretty shallow and resemble the shape of a brillo pad I'm pretty sure these buds were not as good this time bc these spikes started to develop this past summer, about July...then I moved to Chicago (drove to Chicago from NYC), and the plant was in a box for 2 days, then it was outside for 20 days in an area where the temps fluctuated about 25 degrees from day to night, and now its been on a warm southern windowsill since August its probably just confused as heck AND mad about the water quality I will definitely try some purified water though...I would like this one to be a bit more robust, and it definitely seems sensitive to things in the water!! Thanks for all your suggestions
