Question Poor Blooming on Oncid. Twinkle

I wanted to pose a question - I'm getting some really poor blooming on my oncidium mini twinkle this time around, and its confusing me. I posted this plant the first time it bloomed Oncidium Twinkle Red Stars, and the second time it bloomed exactly the same...but this is the third time, and I'm only getting 1-2 flowers per spike, whereas before it had upwards of 10 per spike. They haven't completely opened yet, and there are no other buds on the spikes developing.

There are some things that changed with the culture of this plant; namely, it went from an eastern window to a southern window and somewhat drier conditions, but not really that much drier because the plant is kept in S&H and has been since I purchased it in February of 06.

Does anyone think that perhaps the increased sun might've caused this plant to bloom less? That doesn't make sense to me, but hey, it could be anything. The colors of the flowers are also much darker, which is usually because of increased sun. What do you guys think? You can see the original blooming in my post http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...red-stars.html and the new picture of its current state is below Thanks for any comments! ~Becky

Maybe your oncid just likes it a little shadier than most? Have you changed your brand of fertilizer?

My guess would be the nutrients and not the amount of sunlight.

There was no change in the fertilizer at all....if anything, it was fertilized more than it had been in the past. I just can't figure this one out!!

from what I can see of the plant,I would say that the plant was lacking in roots or a salts build up in the growing medium.I have drawn these conculsions by the amount of of leaf die back.

The plant should be more robust than it looks.I have had mine for Just over 2years and each year it has doubled in size.I grow it in a greenhouse and in the summer the overhead watering go's on every day with weak fertilizer.and the last flowering the flower spikes were over a foot long.I think it needs more water and fert in the summer.

I hear what you are all saying, and I agree - I definitely do have some salt buildup issues, since I use tap water, but that has never been a problem with this plant before. I've been watering it with city water ever since I got it, and the first 2 bloomings were perfect The only part of its culture that has changed is the environment...I think I'll have to get this guy some more shade or something...its so strange, you think they would LOVE having more sun! I guess that's just not always the case, huh?

This cross needs dappled light and regular feeding when in growth,it probably needs repotting too.
