That is awesome! I recommend everyone join their local society. I have seen some great plants come through the raffle table at my society. I once even got a flask of cattleyas this way. Pretty cool. Congratulations!

    Cheers,

    hey that's like a dollar a plant!!!

I second Bruce's suggestion that everyone join their local orchid society... I mean, yes, you have one here online already, so the local one would be your second

it is a great way to meet more orchid folks (don't forget to tell em about Orchidtalk) and like Marissa, some fun way to get more orchids!

    Marissa...nice score!

"Cirrhopetalum (Bulbophyllum) curtisii (pulchellum) "not sure why the name is written this way"
Not sure why they did that but it is not correct in many ways.
All Cirrhopettalums have been moved to Bulbophyllum. So I can see why that part might have be written.

curtisii is not an accepted species name but curtisii is not a synonym for pulchellum. What might have been listed as curtisii is now either Bulbo corolliferum or Bulbo purpurascens. From your pic, your plant is not purpurascens but could be corolliferum or pulchellum. Once it blooms I can confirm which of the two you have.

Dracula felix is not a beginner orchid. Even with my experience I have a difficult time with this species. It needs shade, constant moisture, humidity needs to be very high and it does not like it very warm, it is a cold to cool grower. It is not one to be grown in a house and can be difficult even in a greenhouse. It is a fairly high elevation cloud forest orchid, from Colombia and Ecuador. If you feel you might not be able to give it the culture it needs, you may be better off finding someone, in your society, to trade it with for one that would be easier for you to grow.

Thanks Ron, I kind of thought that was the case with the Bulbo, I just don't trust myself since I'm so new to the orchid world, hopefully I can make it bloom so we can confirm.

You know, while I was reading what you wrote about the Dracula culture I kept thinking about the refrigirator ; cold to cool, shade, constant moisture.....I just wanted it so bad that when I saw it at the raffle table I told myself it's going to be mine and I even kind of hid it in between other chids, not even thinking of the culture it needs. Ya think putting it in a styrofoam box with ice and on top of a humidity tray will help? Just a thought
