    Default Weird phal bud

I'm suprised I haven't seen other's post this sort of stuff. I seem to have alot of phals that, if they do rebloom, have weird things happen. I wish I knew what I was doing to make this happen....i'm guessing it's one of my overcrossed beauties. And I'm shocked the one bud is even developing with it's backdoor hanging open like that! Well, here's a phal noid that is getting ready to bloom. It's got one branch with buds that seem to be doing strange things.

    Connie,

It's hard to say. Sometimes first blooms can get all wonky, never to be seen again.

Sometimes adverse growing conditions when a spike sets can create some weirdo blooms.

And sometimes it's simply genetics. In orchid breeding the ploidy of a plant, or the cloning process can result in sheer Frankenstiens.

It'll be interesting to see how the flower spike blooms out. Be sure to update this thread!

Pictures 2 and 3 looks like the plant from Little Shop of Horror. I can just imagine it saying "Feed me, Seymore."

That is sooo funny...I was going to allude to the "Feed Me Seymore" thing but thought again and didn't. lol Great one!
And as to the weird conditions while it's been in spike....yah, the temps here have been insane up and down. So it was going in the spare bedroom and back on the porch, back and forth for about two months now.

Connie, are the buds following/seeking the bright light? Would that do it? Joe

    Connie,
Hey there. I've had buds form all wonky when I used SuperThrive when the buds were setting--a mistake not made again. Maybe there's some potion or fertilizer that it didn't like? But as said above--sometimes they just decide to mutate this bloom cycle and then the next they are fine. Do take a picture of it when its little mutant self blooms.

Unfortunately, the living room windows got left open the other night and I've lost the mutant buds as well as some large nice ones on two other phals! Another one of those, man do I feel dumb, things that we all do sometimes. Ah well....sorry all of you who were looking forward to seeing the weirdos bloom.
