that arch in the tip of the flower spike is completely normal. as the spike grows that arch will still be present up until the bud starts to open

It just looks like it's growing out, not up. Will it straighten up?

That is a bud indeed. They seem to look like a sheath for a while, then they fill out over time. The growth rate is painfully slow, so be patient.

Is the paph under light or is it reaching for the light source? Just curious since you asked about the direction it is growing... is that a tiny seedling in the pot?

it should start to grow more upright. if not, you can put a stake in the pot and gently tie it closer to upright.

I do that with them here, just as a matter of course. Staking helps keep any natural bends from developing in the middle of the stem as it grows, and that can be important when you go to show the plant. Julie on this one, the flower can overwhelm the stem once it opens, making it top-heavy and want to lean. Don't stake it until it's longer though, or you'll risk breaking the stem.

Thanks all! It is in the windowsill, so I've turned it. Hopefully that will help until it's big enough to stake.
