Default one for the leaf lovers...

    Hi All,

How unusual of me to come home from an orchid society meeting and not come home with a plant... so I didn't want to change the status quo and this is what came home with me...

This is an Ozzie terrestrial, Pterostylis curta. They are better known as "Greenhoods".

I had to have this one as I just love the leaves... so guess I am partway to being a root and leaf lover

    Cheers

Well, that's kind of interesting. It looks like a hosta. I'm kind of into terrestrials, but only have a few. I'll have to Google this one to see what the blooms look like.

You'll be converted yet, Tim. Just wait!

That *is* a very cool-looking plant. Have never seen one out here, though....

I have had one from that genus before and of course killed it when it rotted after it went dormant. Love the foliage on that one!

When I first saw this plant I thought aloud that it had a virus... should have seen the evil eyes I got just for mentioning the V word!

Gin, this looks like it is growing in a mix of river sand and peat.

Mike, I use to do the same, still do, but I found that actually removing them from the main growing area when the leaves starts to die off and putting them aside somewhere and just misting the top of the medium has cut down on the loss...

Will post again if and when the flowers arrive

    Cheers
    Tim

Mine is just going dormant. I guess the dormant season is hot and dry, but does it really care about that, or can I leave it in my basement? Do you think I should dig them up so I can tell when new growth starts?

    Hi Sue,

Sorry I should have clarified why I move mine... it is to ensure I don't overwater them during their dormant phase. If they're dormant and the mix stays wet, the bulbs/tubers tend to rot.

My plants basically gets moved to one end of my growing bench when they go dormant. That way I can still see how the mix is going and can keep em moist. Not very attractive seeing as it's an "empty pot" but moving them somewhere else which tends to be somewhere darker or cooler sends em mixed messages that it's turning autumn again and they start to grow but either die again really quickly or else they just have a really crappy flower which sometimes does not develop properly.

As far as digging em up... I don't know if it's possible to leave them out of a mix until they show new growths, that might dehydrate them too much. And have not tried just sphag bagging em until they do show growths. (will try this when it's time)

I tend to leave them be as they tend to fill out the pot better the following year and make for a better show. I find the hardest part is not knowing if they will come up again... but sure enuff when the weather starts to cool down, they are back again...

    Good growing with your greenhoods..

    Cheers
    Tim
