Question Dendrobium with strange spiking habit.

I will never understand some orchids. This dendrobium had two new p-bulbs growing at the same time. The shorter one has decided to bloom (2 spikes), while the longer one continues to grow and send out new leaves. Go figure...

I grow many dendrobium and this is not unusual. They will also spike again from the older canes so dont cut them off unless they have dried out withered away.

The other thing to keep in mind is that many of the orchids we keep are hybrids. With hybrids, which sometimes have pretty mixed up gene pools, sometimes an inflorescence will get some mixed genetic signals and grow two or even roots. You'll just have to play the waiting game to see how that will turn out. But as Espranch said.......the bright side is that it is flowering. Good Growing!

put it this way: orchids are strange. They are weird in all respects. They also teach us patience and dicipline. Now unless you wanted the larger cane to bloom first, STOP COMPLAINING! lol.... congrats on your spike (or is that TWO i see?) you MUST post some picks when it pops open!

Connie, your orchids must have thought you were getting woo wise, so they threw this at you to humble you. What a nice way to be put in your place!

If they will include blooming in the lessons i'll go for being put in my place...and often! lol And I agree with the person above that says they have such a genetic soup...I agree and totally believe it is responsible for alot of weirdness. S'okay...again, when it involves blooms i'm all for it.

I agree with Edgy and Jordan completely. They are strange and wonderful, they can be interbred ad infinitum and we love the suprises they throw at us.
May all your suprises be this pleasant!
    Good growing,
    Tony
