    Default My Phalaenopsis schilleriana

This is the second species I have at the moment when it comes to Phals, the other is equestris of which I have six (I've written seven in another post, but one of my keikis turned out to be an equestris hybrid).

This guy was shipped to me bare rooted approximately two months ago, and I was a bit nervous since I had never had any species Phals before. At first I potted it in only medium graded pine bark, but did such a lousy job of it that it didn't establish itself and after two-three weeks in this substrate, it almost fell out of the pot. I re-potted it again, this time in my own, at that time newly thought up, mix of medium graded pine bark, sphagnum, and perlite. After about a week in the new substrate a new root started growing, and a week later another root poked through the stem tissue and, also, a new leaf started to emerge.

It now has five new roots growing, plus the leaf, and today I discovered so called "happy sap" on the underside of one of its leaves! It seems I'm doing something right with this guy! I'm hoping for a spike or two till next year.

Here are two pics of it!

I love the mottled leaves. They are so beautiful, even when there are no flowers. And when there are.....
Btw, what's "Happy Sap"? (I haven't heard of that before)

Happy Sap or orchid nectar/honey is clear sticky stuff on happy orchids. You'll find it on leaves or flower stems when orchid life is good! I wonder whether it's sweet. I haven't tasted it. Finding some on my orchids sure makes me happy. I'm not sure if all orchids produce it, but many do.
