    looks like a sheath that probably will give you a flower spike.

    Yes, it is. Mine is in spike too. Now, the correct name is Brassavola subulifolia.

    ok great!! unfortunately one of the sheaths looks yellow. might be dead. the other is green though so hopefully my first brassavola blooms soon!

    anyone growing culcullata ? i ordered some seedlings recently and i don't know how to pot them up when they arrive bareroot (mount?)

    I have only had one brassavola, so I do not know if this applies... Many cattleya types will bloom from dried sheaths. Some produce spikes immediately, others later.
