    Wink Vanda roots

I enjoy seeing roots doing fun things. I have a super large vanda that is throwing out a few keikeis. I don't recall seeing a keikei with roots so large. I hope everyone will add their cool root pictures too. I may be strange...I do this post every so often. I just enjoy pictures of orchids roots....they can be so fun looking at times.

Those are some excellent roots on that vanda. You're obviously taking very good of it.

Thank You.... I should have mentioned, the top picture is of the plant Rich gave me a couple years ago. The bottom two pics is of a V. tesselatta I cut the top off of. This is the top section and it's new roots. The lower section is currently taking up way way too much room in my greenhouse. I need to list it for sale one of these days. Also; my backyard is like a paradise for Vandas with high humidity, tons of air movement and sunny days. I just add water and fertilizer...and move them in and out of the greenhouse depending on the season. I used to be a vanda killer. With practice and advice from other growers on this website I have gotten to where I can keep them alive and occasionnally get them to bloom.

Wow, even the keikeis have monster roots. That is cool ! That is why I picked that one out, was because of the roots on this plant. Now if it only would bloom like the root growth. That would be impressive. Have Fun, Rich

Funny, I was thinking the exact thing earlier. lol If it bloomed like it rooted it would win awards! sigh...i'm getting the honey out! If that won't work it's bloom or burn time.

i have to admit, i don't normally go for the roots, but in the spirit of 'my orchids are thriving' i have come to appreciate them for the overall health of a plant. but i do avoid the long dangly roots if possible. i keep my vandas in pots with medium mostly, so i don't have a lot, one exception is a hanging vanda pachara delight i just got recently. the roots must be at almost 3 feet long. kind of annoying sort of. but anyway, back to 'good' roots... i've been experimenting with treefern pots, and find my orchids love them. i brought my oncidium sharry baby in for the winter, i kinda fried it last fall, so feared it was not ready for the 'survive a socal winter' test yet. i sat the treefern pot into one of those self-watering pots. look how the roots came through the bottom of the pot and grew all over. last summer when i moved it outside, it had a couple which immediately dried up, so now i'm not sure what to do about this one. should i hang it in the plastic pot so the roots survive, or maybe will survive? or let them burn?

If the roots dangling into the water were healthy, i'd keep the bowl. As long as the plant likes it why change it?
